M.J. Azinger’s journey into the realms of folklore-filled fantasy began in her twenties when she read The Mists of Avalon. It wasn’t long after leaving the Army that she then dipped into Arthurian legend and traveled Europe only to fall in love with Celtic folklore. Enchanted by what she found and excited to use her B.A. in linguistics, she dove into learning Welsh and used it as an opportunity to influence her writing. She has spent over twenty years obsessing over ancient mythology, and learned shamanism and reiki, which lent a powerful connection to magical realism. All of this has culminated in the world-building of her current work.

M.J.’s writing is characterized by prolific genre-blending (fantasy, romance, suspense, history), strong romantic elements, fantasy worlds grounded in historical settings, intense emotions, and intricate plots. Her style is highly immersive, featuring strong heroines tied to folklore, swoon-worthy male leads, morally grey characters, and deception. She believes the best fantasy blurs the lines between reality and mythology while conjuring a sense of the extraordinary within the ordinary of human experiences and emotions.

To date, M.J. Azinger is the author of the much anticipated Magdalene of Avalon series, starting with Fae of Legacy and Lies (2026). Her work has been praised for its immersive read, unique magic system and the weaving of mythical creation stories into the series.

Drawing inspiration from traveling in Europe and the Middle East and discovering a crossover of ruins, folklore, biblical characters, and Roman conflicts, and the works of authors like J.R.R. Tolkien and Jennifer L. Armentrout and the medieval Welsh tales in Mabinogion, M.J. Azinger builds universally sweeping yet intimate magical-realistic worlds.

When not battling mythical villains or meddling deities on the page, M.J. Azinger can be found combing the beaches for pretty rocks, fishing with a book in one hand, or hiking and foraging in the mountains alongside her real-life hero husband and her hurricane-like golden retriever. She lives in the Pacific Northwest, a place full of nature and spirits, which fill her novels.
